thanks for this tutorial, i think its better to pump up the contrast directly in the raw menu and not to merge the layers, but instead making a smart object out of them.
yeah, in case of potential future modifications and processing, non-destructive methods should always be used if available.
Merge all layers is actually cmd-alt-shift-e on OSX.
