I feel like these photoshop ‘actions’ take away from people being creative and learning how to do things on their own.. I vote they should stop posting these things.. it contradicts the point of people being here trying to learn… its like putting a liquor store next to an AA meeting spot.. maybe im just being critical but either way..

I agree with what you say to a point.

I personally think actions are a way people can become more creative…. you can download an action and use it in seconds and transform your dull photos in ways you never thought possible….

If you learn from them and see how the user has created that effect you can then tweak it to fit your style.

Rather than being spoon fed a tutorial, you have to look a little harder and learn what the artist has done with each layer and why they choose to use it.

I agree with you to. Most of the stuff that I learned was actually reverse engineering other peoples actions. I can see the cause and effect of using certain adjustment layers and what effect it has after I tweak and re tweak it. At the end of the day the action never turns out to be the original that I started with. Tanks for the collection, you just gave me so much more to do.

@Kurt, I second that, nice one ..haha…the AA next to a liquor store.

Someone should do all of us a favour and compress all these actions into a .zip file :D

Would be awesome, but remember you would have to get permission from over 60 artists!

The link for Holga is Broken. Do you happen to have the user who made it?

  • Caren

Excuse me in advance for this being jumbled.

I disagree with you Kurt, and those that agree with you. Actions don’t take away a person’s creativity; for one a person must choose to use them so nothing is being taken away, and for two many people aren’t inclined to be pro-Photoshop users. Some people prefer to focus the time they spend “learning” something to learn how to successfully take a picture. Some people do enjoy learning about & using Photoshop and the actions come in handy for them. And others who feel that actions should be outlawed won’t use them and shouldn’t take them away from everyone else.

The argument that people should learn how to do things on their own goes even further in the wrong direction when applied to the fact that you are using Photoshop in the first place. I have heard many hard-core photographers who feel that Photoshop makes it easy to not have to take a decent picture-it can be fixed in editing.

If someone has done the work already to create a fancy border, texture and color effect and wants to share it they should be allowed to. Just as the person who figured out how to use shortcuts to create a great tasting risotto should be allowed to share the recipe with those who don’t have the time/desire to spend the time guessing at how to make one.

    Hi There,
I think this is pretty bad from PhotoTuts considering it is a sister site to GraphicRiver where authors such as myself create these type of actions to sell on the market place. The package is great and yes I will be downloading them but only to compare with my own actions. So Envato all I can say as an author for Envato well done for a home goal and thanks for making it harder for authors on GR to generate sales.
From a buyers point of view then great who needs GraphicRiver.

Alot of people are not aware of actions. By doing a free roundup and getting people use to the idea of actions they might then think about purchasing premium actions.

I also sell on the envato marketplaces……but like the free content when I can take it.

PSDtuts+ offer loads of freebies, such as icons and textures but this never seems to effect sales on graphic river or themeforest.

People don’t mind paying for premium content……… Also why not post a link? I am sure users would like to see your actions.

well these photoshop actions can be helpfull in some cases, like if you are in a rush or sth…
but you’d better learn to make your own actions and really use photoshop.

I’m tired to see on every photo blog the same toning, same colors and same shit. It’s like i’m taking a photo of this thin cute teen with a sad face, adding some “vintage” color and voilà !

  • Brian

Thanks for the post. I appreciate the arguments of those who disagree with downloading actions but here’s another point of view.
I’m just beginning with photography and work in a technical field. I struggle to be creative with my photos and am often disappointed when my pictures don’t look as good as others I’ve seen. By exploring the boundaries of my captures with the aid of someone else’e actions I believe I’ll either gain a confidence in my work and experiment with my own post processing or realize that my shots really aren’t that good and make changes there.
It all depends on what type of photographer you are.

Excellent post – I have gone to download 5 of these and look forward to trying them out.
Actions are really useful for speeding up your workflow.

I always thought on actions on Photoshop as a group of commands that I don´t have to make continuously on a big set of photos, and when I don´t have to be creative on that.
To make these effects I’ve seen above, it´s easier or to go directly to an Effect (wish I don’t like), or going into each one of the options (kind of layer, levels, etc.) and try one by one. That’s the way I keep on learning post processing, and keep discovering that we have two ways on Photoshop, or you do something that “nobody” sees to enhance an already good photo, or something that makes a “not so good” photo seem artistic at least.
