Question 6 doesn’t make sense – how does the aperture blade make a lens a soft-focus lens?

Soft focus lenses are a specialty lens. In order to get the blurry but not really blurry look, the aperture blades are altered so they create many holes instead of just one. For normal lenses, the aperture has one hole. For a soft focus lens, the many holes of varying size create spherical aberrations. This causes the image to appear soft, but retain most of its edge sharpness. That’s why I said early, “blurry, but not really blurry.” Some early lenses were labeled as “soft focus” because their designs themselves were not great and created the aberrations, but these days, you get aperture modifications. One of the only current soft focus lenses is the Canon EF 135mm 2.8. You can see a stream of photos taken with this lens here – http://www.flickriver.com/lenses/canon/canonef135mmf28withsoftfocus/ – and this particular image really shows off the effect – http://www.flickr.com/photos/tom_peillon/7144265687/
