Photo Critique #161

Friday Photo Critique is our weekly community project, where we publish a photograph submitted by one of our wonderful readers, then ask you all to offer constructive feedback on the image. It’s a great way to learn more about photography, express your viewpoint, and have your own image critiqued!

Quick Ground Rules

  1. Play nice! We’ve deliberately chosen photographs that aren’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  2. Feel free to offer any type of advice – composition, lighting, post-processing etc.
  3. You can also link to photographs that you feel offer a great example of this type of image shot exceptionally well.

Without further ado, here is this week’s candidate for Friday Photo Critique!

    It lacks contrast and Zip.

I like the framing of the photo. For me, the bright yellow light in the lower part of the photo is distracting. It would be nice to have the taillight trails down the whole street. Good details.

I love the detail in the photograph. At high resolution one can really explore the captured scene. The gentle colour is also quite pleasing. The only thing I don’t like is the halo effect from the Tone mapping. Sometimes leaving it a little darker, and with less Dynamic Range, produces a better end result.

Framing of the picture should be controlled better. There is a building in the left and it draws my attention instead of buildings in the center.

Great detail and color!! I agree the the bright yellow flash in the middle of the building is distracting and I would have liked to see the tail lights go all the way down the street

The is tons of colour in this one and detail. This is a plus but my eye is wandering around looking for the star in the image. The main subject. Is it the sun? Or the buildings? I would say that this is one of those technically correct shots but lacking in feeling. I have the same problem in most of my shots so definitely don’t feel along in that regard Esben

    Hi Esben –

Hope you enjoyed Havana. I hope to visit one day.

Originally looking at your photo, I thought that it was about the older, dark architeture of Havana. Most of the visual weight in the photo is focused on the buildings and they are the elements that are most in focus.

I do like the color in the photo (it’s certainly glowing) but perhaps you could have done more to main the sunlight a stronger element (directly or indirectly) of the photo, e.g. removing some of the buildings, shooting a sunset reflection over the water, showing the sunlight shining through a glass bottle at a cafe near the water.

Just a few ideas. Happy shooting.

It seems to be some old buildings at the bottom and some modern/high buildings on top of the old buildings That is interesting. The post processing of the picture, I really do not like it.
