Photo Critique #152

Friday Photo Critique is our weekly community project, where we publish a photograph submitted by one of our wonderful readers, then ask you all to offer constructive feedback on the image. It’s a great way to learn more about photography, express your viewpoint, and have your own image critiqued!

Quick Ground Rules

  1. Play nice! We’ve deliberately chosen photographs that aren’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  2. Feel free to offer any type of advice – composition, lighting, post-processing etc.
  3. You can also link to photographs that you feel offer a great example of this type of image shot exceptionally well.

Without further ado, here is this week’s candidate for Friday Photo Critique!

The Photograph

Photo Details & Inspiration

  • 50mm
  • f/1.4
  • 1/1250
  • ISO 100

I wanted to capture a fairy meeting in a wooded glen. I wanted it to look as mystical as I could without editing it hard in post. This is why I shot with a high shutter to capture the movement to make it appear she was hovering while in the glen. Everything turned out just as I hoped it would have.

Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached the scene or taken the photo differently? A massive thank you to everyone who commented last week.

The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own photo? You can do so here!

    Hi Cameron,
I think, you might have attached the wrong photo to this post. Judging from the description, there should be something with plants and the sea.
    Cheers,
    Alex

    Right picture, wrong description. Sorry.

Well anyways, I think this is a good composition that was taken at the perfect time of the day, but I also think there was a lot of distraction in this picture. Maybe you could of zoomed and captured something like this (http://i49.tinypic.com/2rdccio.png). And I also think you could have use the grass more to illustrate someone being sneaky and watching them behind the grass (from a grass view).

But that’s just my thought. I’m really a web designer, and I’ve taken a class about photography, so it’s cool to see other’s work and be able to help them out. Just giving you a web designer’s eye though.

a bit more space on the left would have been better.

I love the photo. The only thing I would do is crop the big tree on the right out.

  • matt aronson

would have set a longer focal length, i.e., 75-85mm, for a shallower depth of field and cropped out the tree on the right; beautiful colors and right lighting.

    Excellent photo…..

A wonderful ethereal quality…. but the boots don’t match… Suede and fur knee-high boots don’t fit the style. I keep thinking of Tinker Bell flying around with Uggs on :) I would have asked the model pose bare footed.

The model on the left is beautifully lit….gazing into a golden light…. the model on the right looks almost bored… and is staring at a different location.

Very trivial things…. but this was for the purpose of constructive feedback.

All that being said….. I WISH I had taken a photo as wonderful as this….
