Friday Photo Critique #48
Friday Photo Critique is our weekly community project, where we publish a photograph submitted by one of our wonderful readers, then ask you all to offer constructive feedback on the image. It’s a great way to learn more about photography, express your viewpoint, and have your own image critiqued!
Quick Ground Rules
- Play nice! We’ve deliberately chosen photographs that aren’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
- Feel free to offer any type of advice – composition, lighting, post-processing etc.
- You can also link to photographs that you feel offer a great example of this type of image shot exceptionally well.
Without further ado, here is this week’s candidate for Friday Photo Critique!
The Photograph
Photographer: Brian Warner
Please let us know what you think in the comments – how would you have approached the scene or taken the photo differently? A massive thank you to everyone who commented last week.
The most constructive and helpful comments will be featured on the site. Interested in submitting your own photo? You can do so here!

Awesome photo! I love the colors and textures. I think that adding a main focus to the image could really make it more of a photo with purpose, though.
I really like this photo. The subdued colors have such weight and depth. I like the composition overall with the window and the old dolly. If I had one thing I’d change is to have the entire cork board in the top right in the picture. Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like it just slips off the page and feels cut off.
I like it! Very nice detail and texture.
However, I wish that it was a straight-on shot with less or no lens distortion.
I think it would match the environment better to have it straight on rather than slightly angled.
Great photo! I really like the feel of it and all of the texture definitely adds a lot of interest.
I would keep in mind the details that you may be forgetting about or not seeing right away… things like the lamp that is turned on inside the window that draws some attention away from the tree’s reflection and also the shovel, which takes away from the “antique” feel of the rest of the photograph.
I like the litghning it give the picture a dramatic effet nicely done 2 tone effects. Good work.
IMO the “modern” snow-scooper really detracts from the whole photograph. It’s still a great photograph but without it would have been a lot better.
I like it, I don’t see anything I’d really change.
The only thing i think that may confuse the eye is that everything is old and weathered except for the shovel. It looks brand new. I like the lens distortion. I think it adds interest to the image. I really love the colors too. The pinkish/red color really compliments the Green.
I would have to agree with everybody else about the shovel; Even though, being honest, it is not that big of a distraction. Without it i think the picture would be closer to perfection. Great picture! Good job!
Amanda makes an interesting point about the new looking shovel. It’s not just the shovel, the windows are spotless clean. This is not the fault of the photographer it’s just the way it is. But it does add a bit of mystery to the photo. Is it a winter cabin getting cleaned up for the season? Or did someone, the photographer maybe, just purchase the place and they’re fixing it up.
The composition is well balanced. And the fact it only has one real color, the green trim on the window and door, is nice.
Overall a nice shot.
That’s pretty sweet! Very interesting and presents a nice mood! DARK!
If you like dark, check out my horror shoot!

I think the new things add to the picture instead of taking it away. It’s a good picture and I like how the window is so clean, as if a killer lives there but it neat. lol
I like the photo but the reflection of the flash in the window (is it the reflection?) and the snow scooper somehow don’t fit into the photo …
I Agree with WET with the reflection in the window. Probably the photographer wasn’t able to anticipate it that time(happens to me a lot). But overall, I like the emotion, texture and color.
Keep it up!
Very interesting shot! i love the mood, and don´t have a fight qhit the shovel,
the light reflected on the window looks like the moon showin´ up, but it looks like a kind of lamp inside the cabin.
Great!
Great photo. Don’t see anything I’d change.
If a person was added it could be a location for a superb portrait.
I love the reflection of the tree in the main window. It makes for a great picture-in-picture. I would suggest removing the (indoor light/flash reflection).
I also agree with Magiciandude, regarding the lens distortion. It can be a simple fix in Photoshop to correct those bent lines.
The camera is nicely hidden away from being reflected in the window…either by the shadowy refection or photoshop or by shooting low and slightly angling the camera upwards?
In anycase, a wonderful photo.
I personally like that the shovel is newer and that the light is on inside. The combination of those with the rustic feel gives me a cozy, “new” feeling. Like a new season, a new beginning…there is life again being given to the old cabin. Think the colors are fantastic. Great job.
I like it overall but agree with some of the comments that say that the shovel takes away from the antique look of the photo. I might also change the composition of the shot. Maybe cut the doorway out of it and recompose to include more of the corkboard or do the opposite and include the entire doorway and window and remove the corkboard.
Can someone explain what type of post processing is used to get such a contrasted, almost oil painting look on photographs?
Lovely saturation and detail. Nicely shot and really well processed.
