We’re kicking off our first reader photography project/competition today, giving you the chance to win a brand new Canon EOS 550D (Digital Rebel T2i). We’re looking for you to submit photos on the subject of “Memories”, and we’ll be putting the best entries up for a reader vote in a few weeks!
The competition is now closed, and we’ll be looking through the entries shortly!
The Brief
Submit between one and three photographs on the subject of “Memories”. The topic is wide open to interpretation, so be creative and explore the idea however you’d like. Here are a few ideas:
- An image that sparks a childhood memory
- An image that represents a memory you’d still like to have in 10, 20, or 50 year’s time
- An abstract concept that you feel illustrates the idea or feeling of “memory”
Photographs should be submitted at original, full resolution, and the deadline for entries is Friday 23rd April at 23:00 GMT.
The Prize
The winner of the competition, as chosen by a Phototuts+ community vote, will win a brand new Canon EOS 550D (Digital Rebel T2i). This is one of Canon’s latest entry level DSLR, and has received rave reviews. Featuring an 18 Megapixel sensor, Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor, continuous shooting at 3.7fps, and Full HD movie recording, it’s a phenomenally impressive piece of kit.
How to Enter
Here are the three items that you need to submit:
- Your photographs (up to three)
- A description of 150-350 words for each image, explaining your thinking behind the photograph or the memory that the images rekindle.
- Your full name and website/portfolio address (if you have one).

We’ll be posting up the entries shortly after the competition closes, letting you browse through all the submissions and vote for your favorites. Full details of this process will be announced nearer the entry deadline.

Thanks for competition! Just wondering – can the image be a composite or ‘doctored’ in any way?
Well, since this is phototuts and not psdtuts it should be a photo not a composition or some photoshop comp work. at least i hope it will be like that. I guess typical rules apply like color correction or crop etc..
Post-processing is fine, but I think readers will judge the quality of the photo rather than the work in post. We have plenty of intelligent photographers here!

Any camera is fine – It’s the quality of photography and a good eye for composition that will count most!

WOW this is cool, there has always been an image or two in my mind from my childhood, so i am in. I am a canon baby all the way, got two canon camera now, and a few lens, i was thinking of a third camera the canon 7D, but this one thats up for a win looks awesome also.

Definitely in! With my dad of course, my biggest inspiration. Though what i’m wondering is, i have an old non digital nikon and an old non-digital mamiya and they’re still damn good. Can i scan the images i took, or the photos has to be taken with a digital camera?

Do the 3 photos have to be about 3 different memories? Or can I use 2 or 3 total different looking photographs about 1 memory/the same subject?
I’m just curious about the story. Should we write a story for every photo. Also does it affect the evaluation ? I mean there must be a good combination of a story and a photo ?
