Lewis Hine and Child Labor

Lewis Hine and Child Labor

Just because you didn’t get to go to that awesome photography conference doesn’t mean that you can’t learn something from the pros! Occasionally, we’ll be featuring a recommended photography lecture or interview on Phototuts+.

Lewis Hine is considered one of the pioneers of the American journalistic photography tradition. He documented child labor across the United States in an effort to eradicate the practice. Through the use of honest, well-executed portraits and other documentary images, he attempted to raise the awareness of the practice and reveal it as brutality. This two-part video series chronicles his work.

You can see a large collection of Hine’s work at shorpy.com.

I am an author and historian. For the past seven years, I have been tracking down and interviewing the descendants of some of the child laborers that Hine photographed, and then writing stories about these children so people will know how their lives turned out. Almost all the descendants I have contacted were unaware of the Hine photos of their mothers, fathers, or grandparents. So far, I have written stories about more than 300 of the children. All my work on what I call the Lewis Hine Project is posted on my website at:
