Just because you didn’t get to go to that awesome photography conference doesn’t mean that you can’t learn something from the pros! Occasionally, we’ll be featuring a recommended photography lecture or interview on Phototuts+.
We all know Ansel Adams. In fact, if you ask any American non-photo type to name a famous photographer, Mr. A is probably the only person that will get mentioned. PBS ran a special on him. It features a huge amount of photos along with modern day views of his locations. Add to that in-depth interviews, and this is not to be missed.
If for some reason you’ve never seen Adams work or if you just want to dive deeper into it, please visit www.anseladams.com. For an even more compelling and interactive look into his work, visit PBS’s own site dedicated to this film and the work of Adams by clicking here.

I had the pleasure of talking with Mr. Adams by phone around 1973. At that time one of his 8 X 10 signed prints sold for about $350. I had always thought his prints were unmanipulated. To the contrary, he often did, for some photographs, a great deal of dodiging and burnining, and in some cases, toning to achieve what he had visualized. He kept extensive notes on each negative so the print could be duplicated in the future. Excellent work for someone who trained as a concert pianist.
Just finished watching this (thank you internet tv!) and it was amazing. Great balance of Ansel’s personal life and extraordinary work. It was very fun to see how many of these amazing places I’ve been fortunate enough to have visited. Thank you so much for pointing out this video. I only wish it were in a higher resolution. I am inspired by this great man’s work.
