After a whole year, some HDR photography inspiration is back. Sit back and enjoy the best true HDR photos and tone mapped images on the internet.

HDR images…. A recap

If you missed last years article then here is a slight recap. HDR is a high-dynamic-range photography which is achieved by capturing multiple standard photographs, using different exposures. Then software, such as Photoshop or Photomatrix, is used to merge them together. HDR images can be taken with any camera that allows you to over and under expose a photo.

Tone mapped images on the other hand are fake HDR’s. The photographer has to edit the photos to create a overexposed and unexposed image before merging them together. Any scene containing fast action is usually tone mapped as scenes like that make it impossible to shoot two or more identical images.

Where can I find last years examples?

If you wish to view last years collection of images, have a good look here: 80 Examples of Stunning HDR Photography

Raymond Larose

Raymond Larose started shooting landscapes in 2008. In his gallery, he had a large collection of true HDR as well as tone mapped images. These images below show what can be done when using multiple exposures and not going over the top with the effect.

Have a look at his full gallery here.

David Burch

After using photography as an excuse to get outside and hike more often, David Burch caught the photo bug and has spend many hours taking photos of landscapes. Along with his landscape photography, his gallery contains a large handful of HDR tone mapped images: showing you what you can do with the power of just one RAW file.

Have a look at his full gallery here.

MorBCN

With 600+ HDR’s currently uploaded on his flickr account we may have just met the HDR king.

Check out his full gallery here.

Mark Verlijsdonk

The thing I like best about Marks’ photos is that none of them look like they are HDR images. They just appear to be perfectly exposured images. Have a look at his full gallery for more.

Maschinenraum

Machinenraum is an executive and entrepreneur in the music technology industry, but this doesn’t stop him from being creative and snapping a huge amount of stunning HDR images.

Have look at his full gallery here.

Trey Ratcliff

Trey Ratcliff is a master of HDR work. His online tutorial “Everything you need to know about HDR photography” has been read by thousands. There’s a good chance you have already seen his work with 45 Million hits on his flickr account alone.

Check out his website and tutorial here.

Marcp_dmoz

Marc loves to take and develop HDR images. You can see that in his amazing photography. Most of his work is true HDR with combined multiple exposure shots.

Vxside

A Romanian photographer who processes his HDR images with from just 1 image. This is tone mapping to its full potential.

Check out his full gallery here.

Slack12

After years of misunderstanding the art of photography, slack12 (or Houser) bought a camera and started shooting. Here are some of his strongest images in his gallery.

Some great examples of HDR work here! Really showing what it’s all about. I’ve done a few on http://flickr.com/thefella, but they’re nowhere near as good as some of these!

  2. Don says:

HDR, when done properly can be great. I personally think many of these photos look too “cartoony” for my liking. It makes them look too unnatural.

      Author

When selecting photos for the roundup I attempt to find photos which cover all types of the photography.
So with the HDR it is a mix of true HDR, tonemapped and then HDR used to bring out details……

I understand everyone might not like every photo but hopefully everyone finds at least a few photographers they really do like.

My personal favourite here is actually the selection by Mark Verlijsdonk. You wouldn’t guess at first that the photos are HDR shots.

  3. Interesting article, may I suggest crediting Trey on “The Icy PIt to Hell”… That is also one of his photos.
I do feel that the author could have chosen better examples, as many of these shots carry typical HDR editing mistakes such as halos, uneven toning, etc. Framing and choice of subject matter is also important, shots like “Lifes a stream” could have been shot & processed differently for a more pleasing result…

    HDR photos, LSD style

  5. Andris says:

Many of the shots look great. And I think it’s a nice roundup, but honestly I can’t stand these HDRs anymore. To me it’s an effect that was used way too often over the last one or two years. So I feel definitely sated with those images. It’s kinda like that glossy, shiny “web-2.0″-look in webdesign. It was nice to look at for a few times, but after a while you’ve seen it and can’t stand it anymore.

  6. Rychi says:

I agree with Andris. The HDR effect would to use gingerly. Most of these shoots are overstated..!

  7. PhotoTutsPlus, can you post a tutorial that construct how to make a HDR photo like that?
I’ve tried many times but fail! :(

  8. sushi says:

jesus hate this hdr style, makes me wanna throw up.

  9. Greg says:

    Vomitorium.
All the typical HDR crimes: banal images patched up with technology equals utter kitsch.

  10. Shane Parker says:

I agree with the others, there is nothing I hate more right now than HDR (read: tone-mapped) photos. Unfortunately, we live in a day and age where every kid out there has a DSLR. Instead of learning how to take great photos, they try to make otherwise drab photos look good by boosting the levels all to hell (again, tone-mapped… 99% of these are NOT true HDR) in a program like Photomatix or Photoshop. So sad. It makes me cry every time posts like this are posted which just furthers the epidemic that won’t seem to die out. Luckily, the HDR thing seems to be a stage that beginners usually grow out of, I just wish the trend wasn’t perpetuated by posts like this one.

  11. Hey, thanks so much for the plug! Great selections from all the other photographers highlighted here.

This is probably the only decent HDR shot I’ve had

  13. Mike says:

    one word … HORROR

  14. Patrick says:

FYI all of the moving ones are not true HDR that wouldnt be possible its PSEUDO HDR get it straight.
