I tried a macro shot of a 1:43 scale model of the Honda NSX-R GT – you can see it in my blog:

I collect a specific type of asian doll, mostly for the pictures. Here’s a few shots:

Taking pictures of toys and dolls is a great way to practice portraiture. Since you can’t really change their expression, you have to focus on lighting and posing to convey a mood. It also forces photographers to think of things from a different perspective, especially if they want a background or props to appear in scale.
Awesome collection here. Thanks for putting this post together. Really great creative images. I have done some toy shots in my 365 project this year. http://www.flickr.com/photos/matthewcoughlin/sets/72157625975455532/

These are all so fabulous!!
My work is very similar and very different at the same time.
After spending 2+ years cleaning out my parents’ hoarded house, I decided to make macro images of the some of the old dolls and antique curios along with odd flora and recently deceased fauna. Results are here: http://www.alisonoverton.com/secrethours.htm and here: http://www.alisonoverton.com/secrethours2.htm
I also have a Facebook art page with more toy images: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Alison-Overton-Maker-of-Art/276220456970
Finally, there is a video of a slide lecture i made at NC State this past June about growing up in a hoarded environment and the art I made to work through that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmyjT3U9nXY
Many thanks in advance for your kind attention!! Alison Overton
Very awesome examples. Here’s one I took of a Big Daddy figure in front of a black background, with lights strung up behind it. (Using the bokeh tutorial I found on this very site!)

This is a good collection, however I think that 70 images is really overdoing it. I could more easily digest 20 images.
Hmm, couldn’t you just have stopped when you reached 20….? I enjoyed all 70, great talent out there. Thanks photo tuts+ for sharing.
I had a play around with it after reading this post, check out my results and let me know what you think

The tilt-shift pics are not of toys. They’re of real people and places. The tilt-shift makes them look like toys.
