50 More Fantastic Photos from 50mm Lenses

The 50mm prime lens is often a photographer’s favourite, perfect for portraits, product photography and low light conditions. They offer sharpness that zoom lenses cannot touch. Today, we have a collection of 50 great photos from around the internet that were made with the renowned 50mm lens.

50mm Prime

I used to not understand the 50mm prime. In my mind, it was pointless having a “fixed” lens when there were so many good quality zoom lenses around. However after borrowing a friend’s 50mm for a weekend I decided to purchase my own. I can tell you now it almost never comes off my camera. It has completely changed my attitude toward photography in the short time I have owned it.

With a prime lens, you have to work for your shots. No zooming in. You have to take a step closer or a step back. You suddenly think about framing your shots a lot more. You then take these techniques and apply them to any camera/lens combination.

The 50mm prime on average allows an aperture around F1.4 on a mid ranged price lens, F1.8 on the cheaper ones and F1.2 on the pro series. This allows for some seriously creative shots with a very shallow depth-of-field.

The sharpness of these lenses are amazing. I would suggest opening a couple of these photos up and looking at the large sized view as they are stunning.

If you have never used a 50mm, I suggest picking one up. The cheaper ranges start at around $130, which is pretty respectable in the current market.

People are so often singing the praises of the 50mm lens and this is certainly justified. But the thing is, a 50mm lens will only give you a true 50mm focal length if you are using a full-frame or film camera. On a dx camera its effectively more like 75mm, which is nothing like as versatile (you need a 30 or 35mm to get close to a 50mm equivalent). Id be interested whether any of the images above are shot with a 50mm on a DX or if they are all full-frame.

    Great photos! Really inspiring.

I love shooting with my Canon 50mm f/1.8 II – great quality and aperture for very low price. Here you have a couple of my own favorite shots:

Most of the photos in my online portfolio are taken with my 50mm—I love what it does to everything!

Are all of these taken with a non modified straight 50mm? I noticed one of them said that a telescope was used. :/ not sure that its fair to say that its a fantastic 50mm photo.

I have tried my best to make sure they were all pure 50mm shots.

The telescope one used a eyepiece projection. However I choose to add it into this collection due to the sharpness that the 50mm lens provides.

A bit misleading here with the photos. The 50mm prime lens itself does not have the capability of a good macro. For the macro ones, they must had used a reverse ring.

The rabidosa was shot using 70mm. The irdaport used 20mm.

I agree that cropped sensor changes the focal length. But this doesnt really matter to most people. I am talking about enthusiasts and hobbyists because they may not yet understand cropped vs full frame. But if they enjoy using their 50mm and take good photos technicallities dont matter. After all photography is about capturing light, that special moment and having fun using your camera.

    50mm lens rocks!!!
    My two cents worth.

Hey man don;t knock my 50mm 1.8, it takes great photos

    • http://PSDtutorials.co.uk Peter Sawyer

Im not knocking it. Its a great lens at an amazing price.

However the F1.4 are sharper, faster and more solidly made….. but it doesn’t matter about the equipment. More about what you can do with it.

      • http://flickr.com/photos/beth19 Bethan

And at least 3 times the price! For the money, the f/1.8 is a brilliant little lens. Of course if money were no object I’d love a f/1.4…Maybe in a few years!

Very interesting article, glad i saw it in twitter and decide to click on it. In fact i have been using a Canon 5omm f/1.4 lens for my street shoot, kinda of narrow at times but i love the depth of field once i put to f/2. Love it when i use it to shoot a full length portraiture with depth in the background, it brings out the subject very well. Am using focal length 50mm to do a personal project of lights on the ceiling out in the street in Singapore. Check it out if you like. http://captureasia.photoshelter.com/gallery/Illumination/G0000.5Al9RINS7k/

  • MarkL

    Great collection.

“[50mm] offer[s] sharpness that zoom lenses cannot touch” is a misleading statement. Professional zooms (i.e., 70-20, 24-70, etc.) are nearly as sharp as primes, with difference being so minor that unless you’re printing posters, you most likely won’t notice. Now, the story is much different when comparing primes to amateur zooms.
