50 Magnificent Male Portraits

50 Magnificent Male Portraits

This entry is part 4 of 14 in the Portraits Session
« PreviousNext »

Over a year ago, we featured a collection of beautiful female portraits. Today, we flip the switch and showcase some striking male portraits. Hopefully they will inspire you to go out and shoot your own portrait or those of other people. Feel free to share your photos in the comments!

Portrait photography can be difficult, but very rewarding. The great thing is that you can experiment with long exposure, short exposures, different apertures, lighting and much more. In today’s roundup, I have found images from many different photographers each with very different styles, enjoy!

Before we start, you make sure you check out last year’s collection of female portraits here.

    What a portrait really is:

A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer. (source:wikipedia)

50% percent of your images here are not portraits.

And maybe only 10% of them I would call “magnificent”.

    handsome men

Traditionally, most photographic activity involved the female of the species. To most photographers, especially amateurs, taking pix of men was taboo as the photographer would be perceived as homosexual!
Now we live in an era when men can (almost) get married to each other, barriers and silly taboos are being broken down. Professional photographers have shown the way and, hopefully, even some amateurs will come out of the darkroom and admit that taking pix of men is rewarding. Me? as an openly gay man of 40 have always enjoyed pointing my lens at really interesting-looking guys of all ages. Note that I say interesting-looking guys – I’ steer clear of ‘pretty young men’ as it’s character I look for in a subject.

I do not usually take male pictures as I usually avoid taking portrait pictures.

But during a photography class, I took this picture.
